Let’s be honest here – when Sonic.exe: The Disaster REBORN! first stumbled onto Roblox last month, it was rougher than a chili dog left out in Green Hill Zone for a week.
The game launched in a mess of bugs, broken mechanics, and the unmistakable aroma of “we launched way too early.”
But today?
It’s a whole different beast. Not only is it up and running without immediately imploding, but it’s genuinely fun…and that’s not something we toss around lightly!
If you’re new to this little corner of chaos, The Disaster REBORN is a revival of the beloved survival formula that started with Sonic.exe: The Disaster by OutLaik, which was unceremoniously removed from Roblox this year for infringing upon SEGA’s intellectual property.
You’ve got your EXE (the killer), your plucky survivors, and a whole lot of juking, hiding, and hoping your cooldowns don’t betray you.
So, what’s changed? Just about everything.
No offense, but the original TD Reborn release last month was the Disaster.
It was basically unplayable and was taken down by the devs in a matter of hours. We’re talking janky hit detection, immortal Amy’s running the map, crashes, and a generally miserable experience.
Fast forward to today’s version and it’s like someone sprinkled Chaos Emeralds on the codebase. Maps load properly, animations don’t clip through the floor like a cursed speedrun, and (shocker) the music slaps.
No, seriously – the soundtrack is absolutely punching above its weight. You’ve got new chase themes and music that really sell the horror-action vibe without feeling like reused Sonic creepypasta leftovers.
It’s a small touch, but a big mood-setter.
More importantly, the game’s just fun again. Running from the EXE, coordinating with teammates, panicking when Kolossos starts charging in – it’s all here, and it works.
Now, I hate to be that guy, but we need to address the one thing holding this game back: the killer feels weak. I played a ton of matches today – both as killer and survivor – and not once did I see a game where the EXE successfully eliminated everyone.
Most matches ended with four or five survivors still alive, and the few people that died were usually just messing around too much.
There are a couple likely culprits here:
Cooldowns feel off, especially for survivor abilities. Amy’s hammer throw, for example, seems like it’s on a suspiciously short timer. She’s dishing out more crowd control than a League player on Red Bull.
Hitboxes on EXE attacks feel teeny tiny, especially compared to the original Disaster game. Getting close enough to land a hit feels like you need to invade someone’s personal space and land a frame-perfect punch.
That wouldn’t be a huge deal if it didn’t feed into a bigger problem…in these types of games, nobody wants to play the killer after a while.
Games like this live or die by balance.
And when the killer feels like a punching bag, players do what they always do: they skip their turn. Just like in Dimensional Coalescence or even in the original TD, it’s easier to play as survivor, stunlock the EXE with friends, and let someone else eat the loss.
But if everyone skips killer?
The whole thing grinds to a halt. Match lobbies drag, people leave game, and eventually, the game joins the Roblox graveyard…or at least loses a lot of its potential players.
The answer isn’t complicated – it just needs to be implemented clearly:
Fix the hitboxes. Give the EXE a fighting chance to actually hit something without needing a measuring tape and a set of prayer beads.
Tweak survivor cooldowns, especially on stuns like Amy’s hammer or Meta’s charge. Right now, it’s stun city, and no killer wants to book a one-way ticket there.
Introduce a skip penalty. Nothing crazy– just kick players from the lobby who skip their killer turn back to game screen since they’re hitting “AFK” anyways. Make them rejoin a new server. It’s not the end of the world, but it’s just annoying enough to maybe make them think twice. Either play the killer or take the mild inconvenience hit.
It’s a psychological nudge that works. Nobody likes being booted, even if it only takes one click and 5 seconds to rejoin.
Despite all of this, Sonic.exe: The Disaster REBORN! is honestly a blast to play. The fact that the devs were able to take something that looked half-dead a month ago and turn it into a working and actually really fun experience in such a short span of time is nothing short of impressive.
It captures the magic of the original Disaster, builds on the legacy of TD-style Roblox games, and gives us a solid foundation to grow from. It just needs a little balance tuning to become something truly great.
So to the dev team: You’ve pulled off something most people thought impossible. Thanks!
Now please…buff the damn EXE before nobody wants to play it.
If you haven’t tried it yet, play Sonic.exe: The Disaster REBORN! for yourself on Roblox!
