Kinetic Games has finally cracked the creaky attic door open and dropped the long-awaited release date for their next major Phasmophobia update, and ghost hunters—it’s time to cleanse your schedules. The Chronicle Update is officially arriving on June 24th, 2025, and it’s packing more soul-sucking spice than a cursed Taco Bell run.
This is Dev Preview #19, and while it’s not delivering everything on the ghostly wishlist just yet, what it is bringing looks like a seismic shift in how we’ll play, document, and scream in this game going forward.
So light your candles, ready your sanity pills, and let’s break it all down.
Chronicle Update = June 24th
Media tab lets you view/store/categorize sound, pictures, and video
Unique photos required for “Perfect Investigations”
Apocalypse Challenge is about to get real sweaty
Something new is teased (spoiler alert: it’s VHS-flavored)
Grafton, Horror 2.0, and Character Overhaul? Please hold.
The big headline here is the arrival of the Media tab and new investigation tools, the long-teased feature that turns your in-game camera roll into a full-blown ghost hunter scrapbook.
Think of it as your funderful trophy case of spectral shenanigans—except instead of baseballs and medals, it’s full of videos of blurry shadow figures, spooky sound recordings, and some photos of that one time Little Timmy got thrown through a locker door by a Demon.
You’ll now have an in-game library of your best (and worst) ghost hunting moments. Photos and recordings will be categorized, stored, and labeled, allowing you to reflect on your haunted career like a proud paranormal boomer.
Each photo will be scored based on clarity, category, and value. Gone are the days of getting $5 for a photo of a chair leg and being told it was the ghost. Now you’ll know why that photo earned the points it did.
Yup, a new system for those sweet, sweet full marks. Want that max payout? You’ll need a unique photo for each objective, not just spam-shot feet pics ya pervs.
Get ready to channel your inner ghost paparazzi.
If you’re already sweating thinking about how this will affect your playstyle—you’re not alone.
Let’s get something straight: the Apocalypse Challenge was already a brutal gauntlet of cursed RNG and ghost-type roulette. But with the Chronicle update’s new photo requirements, theorycrafters (and masochists) are already sounding the alarms—this is likely to crank the difficulty to 16.
For a “Perfect Investigation,” you now need unique, clear, and properly tagged photos. That’s all fine on Amateur, but on Apocalypse, with sanity being a pipedream and moving slower than your will to live, pulling off these unique shots sounds like a nightmare wrapped in a camera flash.
If you’ve been putting off this challenge, you might want to get that grind in now, before this system goes live and the difficulty goes sky high.
Before you go sprinting into Phasmo in your underwear thinking we’re getting a new map and character models—slow your roll, space cowboy.
Despite being teased in the dev preview, the Grafton Farmhouse rework and Character Overhaul are not dropping in the Chronicle update.
They’ve been scheduled down the roadmap for (hopefully) later this year—but it’s all part of the master plan.
If you want to know what’s still cooking in the horror oven, check out our Phasmophobia Update Roadmap for a deep dive into what’s coming and discussing about when we’ll see the fabled Horror 2.0 update.
In the meantime, if you haven’t already walked through the Bleasdale Farmhouse rework, do yourself a favor and go experience what top-tier haunted interior design looks like. We have a Bleasdale Farmhouse Guide too if you want to brush up before jumping in.
Let’s talk about that delicious little tease Kinetic Games left us with at the end of Dev Preview #19. In a carefully framed shot, we clearly see a VHS player, accompanied by a few pieces of unknown gear chilling ominously on top.
Cue the X-Files theme.
Longtime dev blog lurkers might remember that back in the Kinetic Games 2025 Roadmap in February, Kinetic confirmed plans to introduce video recording features into the game. And this, friends, is undoubtedly our first glimpse of that new mechanic.
Here’s the theory:
The new gear = placed video recorders
These will likely allow us to record ghost events and interactions
Videos will be saved in the Media tab, alongside photos
Could this open up new objectives? More payout for recorded events? TikTok ghost-hunting compilations? The mind reels. Bazinga.
Whatever it is, it’s definitely a vibe—and we’re here for it.
As someone who’s clocked over 300 hours in this beautifully ghosty hellscape, I can say with confidence: Chronicle is going to be a game-changer.
Literally.
The shift from mindless photo spamming to strategic documentation is going to separate the real investigators from the flashlight-clicking clowns.
And if you’ve been slacking on the Apocalypse badge (like I have; don’t judge my laziness), you’ve got a few weeks left before it becomes your new lifelong regret.

So prep your loadouts, update your journals, and fill up on sanity pills.
We’re in for another haunted ride.
Have thoughts on the Chronicle update? Excited? Dreading it? Still mad the ghost kicked you in the face in Tanglewood last night?
