It’s time to dive into the depths of Darkwater once again, but this time, it’s not just the usual eerie ocean blues – this update’s turning up the heat on this underwater FTL-like game!
With the release of the Darkwater’s Fire and Brimstone update today, the game is getting one hell of a makeover, and we’re not talking just a little cosmetic upgrade. We’re talking new submarines, a slew of new enemies, fiery volcanic biomes, and enough new systems to make your head spin. Buckle up because things are about to get steamy.
You can check out all the juicy details in Targon Studios’ official Steam update announcement, but if you’re looking for a breakdown of what’s changed (and what’ll keep you alive down there), keep reading!
If you’ve ever wanted a challenge that never ends (because who really needs a finish line in this hellish ocean), Darkwater now offers Endless Mode.

Picture this: no rest, no mercy, just a steady stream of danger and the constant threat of being obliterated by enemy submarines. You’ll be testing every ounce of your survival skills as you dive deeper into the abyss.
Sounds funderful, right?
You can access Endless Mode when you finish a campaign – simply interact with the event that pops up on the terminal to keep going or jump down the hatch to finish your run.
Introducing Darkwater‘s latest nightmare: Automatons.
These freaky mechanical enemies will have you questioning whether you’re battling underwater machines or sentient nightmares with gears.
And here’s the kicker: these Automaton enemies can be temporarily shut down with a fire extinguisher…yep, you read that right.
A fire extinguisher.
Darkwater has officially gone from “tactical survival” to “well, let’s see how much damage we can do with office supplies.”
If you were hoping for a relaxing vacation in this new Darkwater update, think again.
The new Volcanic District is all fire, brimstone, and eruptions.
The new biomes, Volcanic Rift and Bristle Colony, will have you wishing for a nice, peaceful dive through the deep sea (spoiler alert: not happening).

Expect intense heat, fiery chaos, and more than a few explosions as you make your way through the new districts.
Pro Tip: Pack your best gear because this isn’t just a new look – it’s a whole new level of funsies and danger. It’s like the ocean finally got fed up and decided to throw a temper tantrum.
Welcome to hell, divers.
Let’s talk about the heavy artillery.
The F1R3 Submarine (yes, it’s spelled that way for a reason) and the Service Submarine are now available to unlock. These aren’t just new toys to play with…they’re pretty much essential to surviving the new challenges of the volcanic zones.
And the weapons?
Explosive Harpoons just got a major upgrade. Now they reload faster and hit harder. Why wait 14 seconds when you can have your next big kaboom in 10?
Get your hands on these new subs and weapons ASAP.
Prepare yourself for an enemy overhaul. New monsters, new attacks, and new vulnerabilities…it’s like the ocean just leveled up its game.
Automatons now have their own dedicated vulnerabilities, and many of your favorite sea monsters (like Anglers, Stalkers, and Burrow Crabs) have been given new attack and death animations.

Not only that, but certain enemies are now susceptible to Slash or Crush damage types. And trust me – you’ll want to know who’s weak to what if you want to get ahead of the curve.
If you don’t know your enemies’ weaknesses, you’ll be in for a rude awakening. Do some homework and learn what damage types work best for each one before you find yourself floating face down.
It’s not all about bigger explosions and more enemies – Darkwater is also introducing new sub systems to help you manage your underwater journey a bit more efficiently.
The Automaton Bay lets you store and manage these deadly machines, while the Piloting system is all about getting your ship in the right position at the right time.
There’s even a new split stack function for your items (press ALT to split stacks in your inventory). You’re going to need every advantage you can get in the volcanic hellscape that’s about to unfold.
Just remember, if you’re not using these new systems to their full advantage, you’re going to find yourself in a whole lot of trouble.
Stay efficient and stay alive in this new update!
The Darkwater devs know that survival is tough, but that doesn’t mean you can’t have some fun.
With the new emotes added in this update (OK, Point, Distress), you’ll finally be able to express how you feel in the most chaotic moments.
Whether you’re signaling your crew to bail or just trying to flip them off for leaving you behind (a man can dream), these emotes are a welcome addition.
Let’s face it, you’re going to need something to do while your sub is burning to the ground…
As if all that wasn’t enough, Darkwater is nearing the end of its Early Access phase.
The next update, Nations, is slated to be the 1.0 release, bringing the game one step closer to its official launch.

But don’t think for a second that this is the end of Darkwater…there’s plenty more content on the horizon. You’ve got a lot to look forward to, including Steam Community Items (trading cards, backgrounds, and badges) and a 30% sale during the Steam Winter Sale!
Welp, that’s the breakdown of Darkwater’s “Fire and Brimstone” update. With new enemies, new submarines, endless challenges, and a whole lot of fiery madness, this update takes the game to the next level.
Dive in now, because things are about to get hot (and not in a good way).

Strap in, grab that fire extinguisher, and let the flames burn. Oh, and don’t forget that if you’re not diving in, you’re missing the boat…literally.

I want to bring both the technical know-how and battle-tested gamer instincts to every article here. I've worked in digital marketing and spoke in conferences nationwide, but my heart’s always been in the trenches of gaming - whether that’s grinding ladders, theorycrafting late at night, or binge-watching the 38th questionable isekai this season.
