There are two things you can count on in REPO: strange game mechanics and even stranger dev plays.
Semiwork, the badass indie minds behind the ghost-hunting gem REPO, recently dropped a new riddle into the community like a cursed VHS tape. It’s cryptic, ominous, and just mysterious enough to kick-start a hundred Discord debates.
But who doesn’t love a good riddle?
Future edit: I think we’ve solved all of the R.E.P.O. riddles, you can find them in this future post, “All REPO Riddle Answers Explained: Update Theories and Clues” but if you want to still go through this first one for funsies – semiwork’s first riddle reads:
I rise, I dip, I rise, I dip, and I stand first in line with moon.
Simple on the surface, sure – but REPO fans know better than to take anything at face value. So what the hell does it mean?
Let’s breakdown some possibilities.
Let’s start with the structure.
“I rise, I dip” repeats twice, which immediately implies motion, rhythm, or fluctuation.
Then comes the kicker: “I stand first in line with moon.”
It’s poetic, but also strangely mechanical. This feels less like a riddle and more like a logic trap disguised as a haiku.
So what could rise and dip in repetition, and also relate to the moon?
Let’s explore the top two theories that make the most sense so far:
This is a kind of metaphorical angle, but I almost want this to be the answer because of what it could be alluding to.
What rises and dips, again and again, and follows the moon’s influence?
The tide.
Ocean tides are directly controlled by the moon’s gravitational pull, and they follow a beautiful, rhythmic pattern: rise, fall, rise, fall. If that’s not a cosmic-level “I rise, I dip” metaphor, I don’t know what is.

And if this riddle isn’t just a word puzzle, but instead a teaser for new gameplay elements, then “tide” becomes an extremely interesting possibility. We’ve already seen REPO play with environmental updates including the moon phases, so could water or tide-based mechanics be coming next?
Picture it now: entities that only appear during high tide, mechanics that require a boat, or new watery locations getting added as maps. Suddenly, “tide” isn’t just poetic – it’s practical.
Wishful thinking?
Maybe. But a guy can dream!
Ok, while I really want “the tide” to be the answer for some splashing fun – I honestly think the letter “M” fits soo well.
Picture a capital M. It literally rises, dips, rises, and dips. You can even draw it in the air with your hand while reading the riddle and go “Ahhh, I see it.”
And what’s the first letter in the word moon? You guessed it: M.

So the final line, “I stand first in line with moon,” could literally mean “I am the first letter of the word ‘moon’” and gives us extra bait to watch future videos to figure out more hints.
Damn you, Pontus, you beautiful madman!
It’s a clean, tight answer. And knowing semiwork’s history of sly, visual clues in REPO, it wouldn’t be surprising if this was a setup for a longer sequence. Maybe we’re looking at a full word puzzle across multiple riddles, with each answer being a different letter.
If the next riddle starts pushing towards another letter, you heard it here first.
Here’s the kicker: we don’t have to commit to just one answer yet and the real trick might be figuring out what kind of puzzle semiwork is playing with here.
If a second riddle drops and:
It also resolves to a single letter, then it’s likely that the first answer must be “M,” and we’re assembling some kind of hidden word or phrase. Think ARG-lite, but with haunted robo vibes.
It clearly doesn’t point to a letter, then “tide” becomes the safer bet, especially if future updates tease new water-based interactions or maps *fingers crossed*
Either way, this riddle is the start of something – not a one-off – so I guess we’ll find out more next week in the next devlog!
REPO’s devs are pulling from their usual bag of layered tricks, and that’s perfectly awesome. It’s the same kind of clever design that made us fall in love with the game in the first place.
So what’s the answer?
Right now, I’m leaning toward “M”, but I’m keeping one eye on the water (just in case).
Because in REPO, you never know what’s waiting to rise next.
But what do you think? Got a better answer?
